Tax updates due to COVID-19

To help Canadians affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Revenu Québec have extended the deadline to file your 2019 tax returns to June 1, 2020. Other changes include:

Federal (CRA) tax returns

  • Individual taxpayers: If you owe taxes or have tax instalments to pay, you have until September 30, 2020 to pay these amounts. Interest and penalties will not be charged on these amounts, as long as you file your return by September 30, 2020.

Note: If you’re expecting benefits such as the GST/HST credit and Canada child benefit (CCB), the CRA is encouraging you to not delay filing your return so that it can properly determine your entitlement to these benefits for the 2020 - 2021 year. If you haven't filed your 2019 return yet, the CRA will calculate your 2020 benefits based on the information provided in your 2018 tax return. However, if the 2019 tax return isn't filed by early September, benefit payments will stop in October 2020 and you might have to repay amounts.

  • Self-employed taxpayers (small businesses): You can defer your taxes owing or instalments to September 30, 2020. Interest and penalties will not be charged on these amounts during this period.

Revenu Québec tax returns

  • Individual taxpayers: If you owe taxes, you have until September 30, 2020 to pay these amounts. If you need to pay tax instalments, the payment of the June 15th and September 15th instalments is now due September 30, 2020.

Note: If you’re expecting a refund, the Revenu Québec is encouraging you to not delay filing your return so that you can get your refund quickly.

  • Self-employed taxpayers (small businesses): The deadline to pay taxes owing and tax instalments have been extended to September 30, 2020.
